§ 15-1. Smoking in hospitals.

  • (a)

    As used in this section:

    Hospital institution shall mean and include any institution whether publicly or privately owned which renders acute treatment to admitted patients within the city limits.

    Smoking shall mean and include the carrying of a lighted pipe, cigar, cigarette or tobacco in any form.

    (b)

    Smoking shall be prohibited in any room, ward, or compartment of any hospital institution where flammable liquids, combustible gases, oxygen, or oxygen equipment are used, stored, or on standby.

    (c)

    Smoking is hereby prohibited in any elevator in any hospital institution.

    (d)

    Smoking is prohibited in hallways in any hospital institution except in those designated public waiting areas where ashtrays of noncombustible material and safe design are provided.

    (e)

    It shall be unlawful for any person to furnish matches or cigarette lighters or smoking items to any patient or person in a "No Smoking" area of a hospital institution in the city.

    (f)

    Those areas where smoking is prohibited under this section shall be posted with "No Smoking" signs by the appropriate hospital institution authorities.
