§ 6-6. Redemption of impounded animals.

  • All large livestock, small animals or fowl or any other animal impounded under the provisions of this article shall be held for at least seventy-two (72) hours, three (3) business days, from midnight of the day of pickup or after the observation or quarantine period during which time the owner may redeem such large livestock, small animals or fowl or any other animal upon paying a fee to the pound and provided that:

    (a)

    The owner of the animal provides proof of ownership and registration (if cat or dog); if not registered the owner must have pet registered with a microchip; and

    (b)

    A current certificate of rabies vaccination is presented (if applicable to the animal); or

    (c)

    Proof that the animal is not vaccinated due to health reasons as verified by a veterinarian; or

    (d)

    Before the dog or cat is released, it shall first be vaccinated against rabies at owner's expense.

    (e)

    The dog or cat was spayed or neutered prior to the impoundment; or

    (f)

    The dog or cat is under three months of age; or

    (g)

    A veterinarian certifies that the dog or cat should not be spayed or neutered for health reasons or is permanently nonfertile; or

    (h)

    The animal is a service animal; or

    (i)

    The owner of the animal has, or obtains at the time of redemption, a valid intact animal permit (if applicable to the animal); or

    (j)

    The dog or cat is spayed or neutered at owner's expense; and

    (k)

    The person to whom the dog or cat is to be released agrees and meets all regulations stipulated by the city animal care services department (at owner's expense).

    (l)

    The owner must adhere to public health prevention procedures and flea and tick control; and

    (m)

    The owner pays the costs of care of the animal (which include, but are not limited to, the cost of housing, feeding, emergency veterinary care, immunizations and routine veterinary medical care for the animal) while it was impounded.
